How many grass plants are in your lawn?

September 17, 2025

There are thousands of individual blades of grass in one square foot of your lawn and there can be up to hundreds of thousands (or more) in your lawn!

Fall is a very important time of year in the Louisville area to give your lawn the support it needs to thrive through the winter and flourish in the spring. Here are our top 3 recommendations for taking care of your lawn from fall through winter:

Lawn aeration illustration: Grass before, aerated with oxygen, water, and nutrients, then after, with healthy roots.

Also called core aeration relieves soil compaction from the dense, clay soils in our area which allows water, air, and nutrients to reach the roots. This strengthens the root system - making your grass plants healthier and stronger to help naturally fight weeds.

Seeding helps increase the density of your lawn which leads to a more lush, green lawn next spring; it fills in thinning or bare spots and replaces the old or damaged grass plants in your lawn due to age, stress, or disease issues. We use a Certified seed that is a blend of three Tall Fescue grass types including drought tolerant and shade tolerant varieties to ensure you’re getting desirable, weed free seed.

Fall Fertilizer

The last three applications of our annual fertilization and weed control program focus on providing the micronutrients your grass plants need to feed its roots throughout winter to start spring strong.

Now is the ideal time for seeding in the Louisville area because we’re experiencing cooler temperatures, warm soil, and less weed pressure. How do you know if you need to power seed or schedule aeration and broadcast seeding? It depends on your lawn.

The ideal time for seeding lawns in Louisville, KY and surrounding areas is in the fall. The warm soil temperatures, less weed competition, and reduced heat pressure create the best conditions for building the density of your lawn. Did you know that grass plants live approximately 7-10 years? This means you have to do regular seeding in order to replenish the grass plants in your lawn.
